What do your dreams mean?
For centuries, people have been fascinated by their dreams and have interpreted their stories and images in numerous ways. Health and sleep professionals acknowledge the importance of dreams in helping your subconscious mind to process the events of your life and to deal with life’s numerous emotional challenges.

Our dreams can tell us a great deal about where we are at in life and how we are dealing with those daily circumstances. They can sometimes be prophetic, allowing your natural intuitive wisdom to bring through information and guidance. And they are often metaphorical.

It’s rare that you will have a dream where the message will be “leave your current job and start a whole new career”! But if you take note of the images in your dreams, the quality of them, and how the dream makes you feel, you will be able to derive a great deal from them. Here are some key dream symbols that occur for many people.

Water
Water often represents emotions. Is the water clear and inviting, dark and murky, turbulent or flowing smoothly? How does the water in your dream reflect some area of your emotional well-being?

Cars
Driving a car, bus, truck or even a train in a dream often depicts how in control or ‘at the wheel’ you feel in your life and if you are happy with your material situation. Is the vehicle in excellent condition, or battered and old? Do you have trouble making it stop or go in the direction you want it to? Maybe it is even going in reverse or careening wildly around the road!

Note which areas in your life you feel are on or off track, or need a tune up. Perhaps a whole area of your life is due for a trade-in! If you are considering a big change and you dream of a happy drive in a beautiful car that could be an excellent cue to take that next journey in your life.

Teeth Falling Out
Teeth usually represent structure – in real life they help your face maintain a normal shape; and wealth – in tribal cultures teeth are traded, kept after death, and in some Western cultures people have gold, silver, diamonds and so on implanted in their teeth.

Teeth can also represent power and even aggression, depending on the overall nature of the dream. Check how these possible meanings may apply to your life, especially if this or any of the other symbols are recurring.

Being Chased
Many people dream of being chased by someone unknown and even frightening. This usually indicates deeper feelings of vulnerability, feeling unsafe in your life, or fearing the unknown. We all fear what we can’t control and that which is unexpected.

If you have dreams of being chased and find them troubling, make sure that you are doing the best you can to nurture yourself by eating well, getting enough rest, and reaching out to others for support when you need it. Don’t try going it alone. We all need a little help from our friends and family sometimes.

Snakes
Snakes are a fascinating dream symbol. They can mean that the dreamer is afraid of, interested in, or even likes snakes. But on a deeper level snakes will represent feminine wisdom, emerging spiritual awareness, and a stirring of the sexual energies. They can also be a symbol of health and healing, depending on the dream context. Look at the overall story of the dream and at what the snake or snakes are doing, and see which adaptation feels most appropriate.

Tips for understanding and remembering your dreams

Notice how any of these common images relate to your own dreams? If you are really intrigued, buy yourself a dream journal (a simple notebook will do) and jot down whatever you can remember about your dreams. The more often you write about your dreams, the more you will start to remember.

Another helpful tip is to lie in bed for a few minutes after you wake and give yourself time to remember. Moving about or leaping out of bed as soon as you wake can cause dream memories to disperse. Staying in the position you wake up in will help you to remember your dreams more clearly; no one really knows why this works, it just does! It’s just a matter of creating new habits to help you connect more clearly with your dreams.
