The perfect balance for mind, body and spirit
A Zen bedroom is an indulgent oasis that purifies and rejuvenates your mind, body and spirit. It’s a place where you love to spend time and where you escape from the stresses of the outside world.
A Zen bedroom is defined by:
- clean lines combined with green and brown hues drawn from nature;
- fluffy down pillows covered with indulgent, soft organic fabrics;
- the perfect balance of color and essence, and the Five Elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water);
- properly placed objects;
- clutter – both in the room and in the mind – is eliminated.
For centuries the Chinese have been practicing Feng Shui, which is also known as the art of object placement. Feng Shui aims to harness positive energy from the traditional Five Elements. When the elements in your home are in perfect balance, this enhances our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Color and Essence
The elements of Color and Essence have been recognized for centuries as having profound healing effects. The colors we surround ourselves with and the essences we anoint ourselves with can help stimulate, relax and empower us.
Each of our chakras – or seven major energy centers ‘Wheel of Light ‘ positioned along the spinal column – has a unique function that corresponds to a specific Color and Essence. These energy portholes regulate the flow of energy in and out of our bodies, helping to create balance and harmony.
Colors for your bedroom Zen bedrooms support the three ‘R’: Rest, Rejuvenation and let’s not forget Romance!
Soothing earth inspired neutral color schemes with textures inspired from nature are ideal for the bedroom. Monochromatic medium to dark browns, greens and blues are chic and luxurious.
Red stimulates the adrenal glands and other passions, which is why it is not an advised color for restful sleep.
Green is healing, balancing, restful and fresh
Red is passionate, intense, competitive and sexy
Brown is comfortable, grounding, steady and reliable
Blue is calming, peaceful, pure and tranquil
Complement colors to your skin tone. When creating custom interior color palettes, I place paint chips next to my client’s face to find their ideal color; latte with pink/red undertones work for most.
Wood (color - green) Wood symbolizes spring, growth and plant life. Wood energy is expansive, nurturing and versatile. Wood can be a supportive walking stick or a spear.
Wood elements for the bedroom could include bamboo flooring, sisal rugs, wooden cabinets, plants and cotton towels.
Fire (color - red) Fire symbolizes summer, fire and heat. Fire energy is passion, honor and fairness. Fire can be warming or aggressive. A little fire goes a long way!
Fire elements for the bedroom could include:
- burning candles;
- light fixtures;
- man-made materials;
- symbols or artwork of the sun.
Earth (colors - tan and yellow) Earth symbolizes the nurturing environment which enables seeds to grow, grounding and wisdom. Earth can be nurturing, supporting and interacting with all of the other elements, or oppressive.
Earth elements for the bedroom could include:
- granite counter surfaces;
- porcelain tile floors;
- beach stone inlay flooring.
Metal (colors - white and gold) Metal symbolizes autumn and strength. Its pure nature represents solidity and the ability to contain objects. Metal can be a beautiful, precious commodity or the blade of a weapon.
Metal elements for the bedroom could include:
- cabinet hardware;
- vases;
- sculptures;
- clocks.
Water (colors - blue and black) Water symbolizes winter, purification and water itself, gentle rain or a storm. Water suggests the inner self, beauty and art. It touches everything. Water is nurturing and supports with understanding.
Water elements for the bedroom could include:
- meandering patterns;
- fish tanks;
- artwork of rivers, lakes or streams.
Placement of objects Zen bedrooms are tactile and sensual; they nurture all our senses. They should support our daily routine and serve as refuges from our busy lives.
Declutter! You will sleep better
Minimize accessories and remember less is more. Candles add romance; fresh flowers add fragrance and beauty.
Multifunctional storage ottomans serve as coffee tables and a place to conceal items.
Aromatherapy balances the mind, body and spirit.
Reduce unnecessary electronic devices from your room; too many EMF are harmful.
By using the above tips and adding your own creativity, you should easily be able to create your own Zen surroundings. We spend one third of our lives in bed — we might as well do it in luxury. After all, you deserve to come home to a beautiful, relaxing Zen bedroom that balances your mind, body and spirit! |
